“First I couldn’t understand why You would want to die for me but even before I was formed, You looked and saw my needs.” The very first line of the song, Undeserved from the album, Redemption Music by Christian Reggae Artiste, Gozzy shows how many of us feel today when we think of the goodness of God, when we think of the sacrifice that Jesus did for us. We think to ourselves, “Am I really deserving of this?”, “Why would the God of the universe want to die for me?” Why? Because He loves us, because He saw our needs and our frailty and sent His only Son to give us life.

We may think that we are undeserving but God has called us and has chosen us to be artists who would show forth His glory in the earth. The word ‘glory’ refers to a number of things. It is our praise, worship and thanksgiving to God. Glory is also the magnificence, splendour and beauty of God.

As artists, we are given a mandate to give God glory through our talents and gifts. Whether dance, music, fashion or food, our focus is to give glory and praise to the One who deserves it (1 Corinthians 10:31). Are we giving God glory through our songs, through our choreography, through our designs?

5 So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.” 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the altar. 7 And he touched my mouth with it, and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your iniquity is taken away, and your sin purged.” 8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.” Isaiah 6:5-8

Isaiah was before the throne of God. He saw the glory of God, he saw the angels, he saw everything that happens around the throne. After seeing all of that, Isaiah said ‘woe is me’. He began to feel undeserving. He realized that he was not worthy of this experience, he was not worthy to stand before God. Many times we think that of ourselves but the truth is that we have been given the opportunity to come to the throne of grace boldly (Hebrews 4:16). After the angel touched the mouth of Isaiah, something changed. He no longer said ‘woe is me’ but he said ‘send me’. When we accept that through Jesus’ sacrifice, we are clean, we realize that the next step is not only to stay in that place of being holy before God but availing ourselves so that He can use us.

God wants to use us for His glory but some of us still think that we are undeserving. Some of us still think that we are not good enough or fit for the task at hand. God does not call the equipped but He equips the called. It’s time for us to arise as the true artists that we are and shine because the glory of the Lord is upon us.

“The glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together”
