“Creativity is contagious, pass it on”- Albert Einstein

What is creativity?
Creativity, like variety, is the spice of life; and just like spices it is the sweet aroma that permeates the atmosphere and transforms the blandest of spaces/palates. Have you ever had a boss roti or a Kingdom Arts Snickers Cheesecake? (*Talking about cheesecake, I just want to thank Jesus for that decadent treat that He caused someone to invent, Amen.*) Then you know what I mean, carry on…NOT. Life cannot be business as usual after food like that. OK, enough about food.
Creativity is like confetti- it is so colourful, it brings so much cheer to life and sometimes it can get messy but, some like it hot and others like it cold, some like it in the pot nine days old- so to each his own. I am sorry, I do not know how I ended up on food again.
Imagine a world where there were no artisans, musicians, dancers, or footballers? Imagine a world without Chopped or Property Brothers (Food Network/HGTV fans pressure nearly rise dey boy- calm down I am being hypothetical!!!).
Furthermore, what if there were no outlets in which the aforementioned could exist, express themselves, strive, and thrive? What a pretty dull place planet Earth would be!
Have you ever heard a really good Christian rap song with ridiculous puns that made you run around the house screaming only to have your friends and neighbours not share in the excitement? No? Me neither, I’ve never actually run around the house screaming- artistes take note eh!
Creativity in the Caribbean Space
In the Caribbean, our diversity is what makes us unique. It is the perfect ingredient in our creative callaloo. We are a melting pot of cultures and the quintessence of creativity. Our religions, ethnicities, food, vernacular and dress scream ‘diversity’. From the native Garifuna peoples of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to the Javanese of Suriname, our ancestors have deposited in the bank of our existence from which we are withdrawing on a daily- with interest. However, we must be careful not to lose our identities in the process.
Creativity in Everyday Life
The creative person rejoices when they are around like-minded people who share the oddities that make them uniquely different. In our world, sometimes the creative stick out like a sore thumb. For me, creativity is infectious and in everything I do and there must be that element of creativity or uniqueness that make people say, yes that belongs to Shanelle and no one else. It is with this in mind that my friend and I formed a natural hair group called ‘Beautiful Crown SVG’ with the tag line, #EWMYU or ‘Embrace What Makes You Unique’ and indeed, this is a clarion call to all peoples to embrace whatever makes you unique as a gift from God.
I for one am a fan of colours, everything from my hair to my fingernails have been laden with colours- it is my chosen form of expression and many people may just think “she’s doing the most!” when it’s really just me being me.
History has shown us to be a people who fear that which we do not understand. The trick is to embrace and not to shun creative minds and thinkers just because they are different or choose to express themselves differently.
As a spoken word artist, creativity thrives in me. To others, it’s just a bunch of words but to me, it is the brush stroke that transforms an ordinary canvas into an oasis of emotions. Creativity is like a deep well that no matter how many times it is tapped into, can never exhaust its store. It is a bottomless pit of ideas that transforms the mundane into the Sistine chapel, you get me?
