Go For Glory!

Two things happened which helped me to determine the direction for this post. First, a friend sent me a message of encouragement which ended with #GoForGlory. Then the next day, I was reading the news, only to see that the top prize for a tournament in Barbados was less than I could ever have imagined. It was at this point I heard the Holy Spirit whisper “they don’t do it for the money, they do it for the glory”. Brethren, I want to encourage us to do everything for the glory; not our own glory, but for God, our glory.

When I heard the word ‘glory’, I would immediately think about the glory of the Lord which “rested on Mount Sinai” (Exodus 24:16 NKJV) when Moses went up to meet with God, and try to imagine what the sight was like. Exodus 24:17 tells us that “The sight of the glory of the Lord was like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel.” God’s glory, His weight and splendour, was like a consuming fire, it engulfed the top of the mountain. God’s glory was visible and tangible to Moses. It was the supernatural power of God manifested in the natural; for all to see.

Another friend said recently “I told God, ‘I want to see Your glory’” and God responded “show me your commitment”. And I thought wow… “Am I truly committed to Jesus Christ?” Are you truly committed to Christ? Can God openly share Himself with us?

One of my favourite Psalms says “Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it (your heart’s desires) to pass.” (Psalm 37:4-5 NKJV) Our commitment is a conscious decision to roll ourselves into His capable arms and never to leave. It is to not be moved, even when the storms of life are raging and we have no strength left. Many of us give up, being drawn away by lust and some have drawn back (Hebrews 10:39). Instead, we must call to God in the midst of our trouble (Psalm 3). Those who remain steadfast and unmoveable, always abounding in God’s work, the glory of the Lord shall rest upon us.

The word of God says that men will exchange the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man – and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things (Romans 1:23), and God will destroy them. They will exchange the glory of God for things that won’t last, defiling themselves and dishonouring God. They will exalt the bodies of women and men, they will uphold birds and animals and reptiles above this beautiful God, this holy God. But their end is destruction. Beloved, we are not far from reproach if we do the same. God will not spare us in the Day of Judgment if we change our glory for what does not profit (Jeremiah 2:11 paraphrased). If we turn from God to something that is worthless and temporary, we too will be destroyed because God is no respecter of persons. Let’s not change our glory, forgetting our Saviour (Psalm 106:20-21 paraphrased).

David surmised beautifully – “But You, O Lord, are a shield for me, my glory and the One who lifts up my head.” (Psalm 3:3) God is our glory. He is our beauty, our splendour, our praise, our renown, our exaltation.

I’m not speaking of walking around with a fire on your shoulders for everyone to notice. But the glory of God will draw men to you because it will be visible; all men will see.

Arise, shine; for your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people; But the Lord will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you. (Isaiah 60:1-2)

My name is Janene Corbin. I am 23 years old and a law student at UWI Cave Hill Campus. I am also a Spoken Word artist. I became a Christian in 2008 and I have been ministering spoken word for about 4 years. I have ministered at various churches across Barbados and for events such as the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF) production, and ‘Discover’ by Young Adults Making A Difference (YAMAD). I believe my greatest accomplishments in this art form were teaching spoken word and using it as a tool to preach the gospel.
