STUCK!?

Have you ever played a piano with a key that keeps getting stuck? And every time you get to that particular key, it threw everything off? That one bad key was just enough to discourage you from finishing your musical piece and you felt like you couldn’t continue without that perfect sound or tone.

That is how many of us feel sometimes. We feel stuck... just like that key. Maybe it wasn't a case of trying to write a new song but a film script or book, and it seems as though your "creative flow" just stopped. Nothing comes to your mind, no ideas, no inspiration... nothing at all! Recently, each time I wanted to write an article, I felt uninspired. Even before I began this one, I felt stuck. I'd chosen a good theme, but when I tried to write there were no words. I started to get frustrated and I thought to myself...

...What's wrong with me? Why can't I start this article?' I've written before so why can't I write now?!. Then I decided, it was time to take a break!

I went outside, looked around, looked at my phone for a bit and I saw a picture of a piano and then it all clicked... I'd received a wave of inspiration.

Writer and Founder of Pinky Promise, Heather Linsey shared her experience of being stuck...

"I hit writers block earlier but I was forcing myself to write. I texted my hubby and told him my struggle and he immediately told me not to write if I'm not focused. So, I did a few other things, took a walk and now... The words are flowing and the Lord is showing me so many things. I learned a lesson today. Just because I'm determined to do something, doesn't mean that it's going to be productive in that moment. I want the Holy Spirit to lead me in all things & this morning, I wasn't getting any revelation. So, setting it down was hard for my type A personality but if we are really led by the Lord, we have to be willing to adjust, even if we don't understand. Cheers to not forcing Gods hand, even in the little things. Rest."

The truth is, sometimes we can be too hard on ourselves and we think that everything will come all at once, but it doesn’t. Sometimes a song will take two weeks, sometimes a day, even a year to finish. Sometimes a new outfit can take months, but we have to be consistent and patient as we work at it.

Timing is very important. Every idea that we have is not always for the present time. We may be stuck because the time to develop that idea wasn't right. Two years ago, I started writing an article and in the middle of it, I got stuck. I couldn’t write anymore. At the beginning of this year, I went back to it and finished it with ease. Who knows... I've grown and experienced much more since starting that article and I'm more matured and knowledgeable now than I was two years ago.

In Ecclesiastes 3, we learn that there is a time and a season for everything and it is very important that we understand this. It is our responsibility to be aware and to be spiritually discerning of the times and seasons in our lives.

Being stuck is a part of life and it happens throughout our journey but we mustn't allow it to hinder us from persevering especially when we find ourselves in a dry season. We can’t give up on the process and we shouldn’t give up when things don’t seem to be going smoothly or the way we planned. When stuck, we must remember that God is working all things together for our good in the end and He is the author of all creativity. Creativity existed with God even before the earth was created.Without God, there would be no such thing as creativity. He is the One who gives us the ideas and the inspiration; It is He who gives us the ideas, the moments of inspiration and most importantly the opportunities to co-create with Him.

So if God gave inspiration for that brilliant recipe that everyone loved and if He gave directions for that musical arrangement that was "off the chain", why shouldn't we trust Him to do it again? We have to connect with our creator and continuously tap into the creativity that's available to us through the leadership of His Holy Spirit. He is the only One who can inspire us and cause our "creative juices" to flow.

Don’t be anxious; don’t worry (Philippians 4:6-7).

Take a break, relax, eat ice-cream, enjoy nature, praise, worship... Being stuck is not the end, but it is the beginning of something creative where we are forced to rely completely on God and His abilities through us, rather than on ourselves. When we recognise that it's not about us- it's not about your talents or my gifts but about the glory of God being displayed through them, He will show Himself ever faithful and true and continue to water the driest places within us.

Let God shine! ...In those times when you feel stuck, remember that He is the author of creativity and He is more than willing to help you. Further Reading: Ecclesiastes 3
